Federal safety officials are urging immediate action after a serious warning involving electric bike batteries sold nationwide. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a public health and safety alert on November 24, 2025, warning consumers to stop using certain lithium-ion batteries made for Rad Power Bikes. Situations like this often raise questions that our Seattle, WA product liability attorney helps consumers and families address when dangerous products enter the market.
According to the CPSC, the batteries—models RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304—can unexpectedly ignite or explode, creating a fire hazard. The risk is higher when batteries or their harnesses have been exposed to water or debris. Investigators are aware of 31 reported fire incidents linked to these batteries, including 12 cases of property damage totaling approximately $734,500. Notably, some fires occurred when the batteries were not charging, were not in use, and were simply in storage.
The batteries were sold with several Rad Power Bikes models, including RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, RadRover High Step 5, and others, as well as sold separately as replacement batteries. Consumers purchased them through RadPowerBikes.com, Best Buy stores, and independent bike shops, often paying around $550 for replacement batteries or up to $2,000 when bundled with an e-bike.
The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately remove the battery from their e-bike and dispose of it through proper household hazardous waste programs. Importantly, Rad Power Bikes has declined to agree to a recall, stating that its financial situation prevents offering replacements or refunds to all customers. As a result, the CPSC issued this warning to expedite public notice and reduce the risk of injury and property damage.
How Product Liability Law Addresses Dangerous Products
When consumer products pose unexpected risks, product liability law provides a framework for accountability. Our Seattle product liability lawyers regularly works with individuals harmed by unsafe or defective products, including lithium-ion batteries and other electronics that carry fire or explosion risks.
Manufacturers, importers, and distributors may be responsible when products are unreasonably dangerous. Our product defect lawyers examine whether design flaws, manufacturing errors, or inadequate warnings contributed to the hazard. In cases involving batteries, this may include reviewing testing data, prior incident reports, and whether known risks were properly disclosed to consumers.
Our defective product lawyers also help clients understand their options when recalls are delayed, refused, or incomplete. Even without an official recall, companies can still be held accountable if consumers suffer injuries, property loss, or other damages due to unsafe goods. Fires that start during storage or normal use often raise serious concerns about product safety standards.
Consumer protection is another key focus. Our consumer safety lawyers advocate for individuals who unknowingly purchased dangerous items and were left without meaningful remedies. When companies cannot or will not offer refunds or replacements, legal action may help recover losses and encourage safer practices industry-wide.
